In the early moments of the Netflix adaptation of Liu Cixin’s celebrated sci-fi trilogy “3 Body Problem,” intelligent beings from distant reaches of the cosmos orchestrate a mesmerizing display to capture humanity’s attention. Under a clear night sky, stars pulsate, blinking on and off like a cosmic Morse code, transmitting numerical sequences. Two physicists, one captivated and the other unnerved, witness this spectacle in an Oxford courtyard. The following day, amidst disbelief, Saul Durand dismisses it as an elaborate prank, echoing the skepticism of Earth’s powerful telescopes that failed to detect the celestial message. However, the encoded twinkles align with a recurring countdown visible only to Auggie Salazar, a nanomaterials researcher, hinting at a personal connection to the cosmic communication.

Even before the arrival of extraterrestrial beings, the world of “3 Body Problem” sprawls across time, geography, and reality. The series, helmed by “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss along with Alexander Woo, initially grounds viewers in a conventional mystery: a series of scientist suicides captures the attention of investigator Clarence Shi. These deaths, linked to a haunting countdown, reunite a group of Vera’s protégés, including Saul and Auggie. As the narrative unfolds unpredictably, intertwining linear and exponential paths, Clarence surveils the Oxford Five, leading them to confront virtual realms and existential challenges.

Interwoven with the present-day tale is the journey of Ye Wenjie during China’s Cultural Revolution, whose physicist father’s demise fuels her own scientific endeavors amidst political turmoil. Wenjie’s ideals clash with Mao’s policies, echoed by American activist Mike Evans, propelling them towards radical notions of human survival and succession.

“3 Body Problem” defies traditional sci-fi tropes, presenting a future encounter with aliens centuries away. This prolonged anticipation poses political, economic, and ethical quandaries, paralleling contemporary dilemmas. The series balances intellectual provocation with visceral drama, juxtaposing inventive horrors with heartfelt human connections.

Benioff and Weiss infuse the narrative with depth and relocate the action to the U.K., crafting a sprawling yet manageable adaptation. The sleek production design juxtaposes cosmic wonder with terrestrial grit, embodied by the relatable Everyman, Clarence. The alien threat serves as a metaphor for impending environmental crises, evoking responses ranging from denial to messianic hope, reflecting contemporary anxieties.

In its fanciful premise, “3 Body Problem” offers a lens to examine present dilemmas from a safe distance, echoing the sentiment that imagining a future conflict is more palatable than confronting current challenges—a notion relevant to both characters and viewers alike.
