Prime Video has acquired the family drama series “The Baxters” from LightWorkers Media, a company focused on faith and family values, co-founded by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey. This acquisition comes under Amazon MGM Studios, following Amazon’s purchase of LightWorkers’ parent company, MGM.
Based on Karen Kingsbury’s best-selling book series, the 10-episode series is executive produced by Roma Downey, who also stars as Elizabeth Baxter, the family matriarch, alongside Ted McGinley as John Baxter. Set to exclusively stream on Prime Video in spring 2024, the series was filmed in 2018 and was initially intended for LightWorkers Media’s platform. Will Packer serves as an additional executive producer.
“The Baxters” follows Elizabeth and John Baxter and their five adult children. Season 1 focuses on their daughter, Kari, portrayed by Ali Cobrin, who discovers that her husband, Tim, played by Brandon Hirsch, has been having an affair with one of his college students. As Kari’s faith and family are put to the test, she embarks on a journey to rediscover the true meaning of love and to salvage her marriage, all while navigating life’s challenges with the support of her family.
Roma Downey expressed her excitement about bringing inspirational content to Prime Video, acknowledging the massive fanbase of over 25 million readers of the Baxter series books.
The ensemble cast includes Masey McLain, Josh Plasse, Cassidy Gifford, Reilly Anspaugh, Emily Peterson, and Brandon Hirsch. Roma Downey and LightWorkers Media acquired the rights to Kingsbury’s “The Baxter Family” novel series for television eight years ago, fulfilling Kingsbury’s dream of seeing the series find a home on Prime Video.
“The Baxters” is a collaborative production between LightWorkers Media, Will Packer Media, and Haven Entertainment, with Jessie Rosen serving as showrunner and executive producer. Other executive producers include Kevin Mann, Brendan Bragg, and Jaime Primak Sullivan, with Karen Kingsbury and Rick Christian as consulting producers.
