Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has revealed its newest star – and comedy fans will not be disappointed.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg has been announced as a new web-slinger in the sequel to the 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Samberg is to voice the role of Scarlet Spider, aka Ben Reilly. Scarlet Spider is a clone of Peter Parker/Spider-Man that premiered in Marvel Comics in 1975 and was featured more heavily in later years.

Fans of the first film know that Miles Morales, aka Spider-Man (voiced by Shameik Moore), took over the mantle of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man in his timeline when Peter Parker died.

However, he soon discovered that he was not the only Spider-Man or Spider-Woman out there and that there was a whole multiverse of Spider-People.

Little is known yet of how integral to the sequel Samberg is; however, the film lands in cinemas on June 2, and fans can expect more news to come.

Samberg will join previously announced returners Moore, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, Luna Lauren VĂ©lez as Miles’s mother Rio, Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’s father Jefferson Davis, and Jake Johnson as Miles’s mentor Peter B Parker.

Other cast members include Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk and Amandla Stenberg as Spider-Byte.

The long-awaited film dropped its first trailer at the start of the year, and some lucky viewers have already screened it.

Audience reaction so far has the film as highly pausable to take in all the graphics due to it being “an actual work of art” and that it is “darker and sadder” than its predecessor.
