We have an exclusive clip to premiere of the new animated series Oni: Thunder God’s Tale ahead of its release on Netflix. The four-part series, which delves into a mytholical world of gods and monsters, is set to debut on the streaming platform on Oct. 21. You can get an early sneak peek by watching our clip below, which features footage of the series along with voiceover artist Momona Tamada speaking about her character, Onari.
“Honestly, I relate really closely to Onari in a lot of things. Feeling like an outsider, no matter where you kind of are, was something that I related really, really strongly to,” she notes. “Both my parents are Japanese, I’m Japanese, but sometimes there’s parts of me that are like, ‘Do I belong here?’ But then when I go back to Japan, it’s almost like a part of me that’s lost there too.”
Tamada also touches on how the animated event delves into the exploration of Japanese mythology while also relating to Onari in their own way.
“I think audiences can be excited to see Japanese mythology and folklore, but also finding themselves in a part of Onari, and I hope that they’re able to connect with her journey that she goes on in some aspect of their life,” she says.
Oni: Thunder God’s Tale is created and directed by Daisuke “Dice” Tsutsumi, while Mari Okada served as writer. The voice cast includes Momona Tamada, Archie Yates, Craig Robinson, Seth Carr, Brittany Ishibashi, Omar Miller, Miyuki Sawashiro, Yuki Matsuzaki, Robert Kondo, Anna Akana, Charlet Takahashi Chung, Tantoo Cardinal, and George Takei.
Sara K. Sampson produces Oni while executive producers include Robert Kondo, Kane Lee, and Daisuke “Duke” Tsutsumi. Sampson is also co-executive producing with Megan Bartel.
“Oni is a four-part singular story made for every generation” Tsutsumi says of the new series. “This animated event will delight young audiences with its playful humor and fantastical world settings, and will captivate adults with its cinematic storytelling and compelling depth of our hero’s journey. I hope that when you watch, you can also identify with this story, because one way or another, we all have struggled with the gap between who we want to be and who we truly are.”
Oni: Thunder God’s Tale will premiere on Netflix on Oct. 21, 2022. You can watch the official trailer for the series below.
