Subscribers in the U.S. will be able to watch “King Charles: The Boy Who Walked Alone” on May 2. The documentary provides a glimpse into the life of the new monarch, featuring interviews with former friends, girlfriends, schoolmates, and private staff ahead of his coronation later this month. Blink Films, the producer of “Diana: The Truth Behind the Scandal,” and Paramount Global’s See It Now Studio collaborated on the documentary. In the U.S., it will be a Paramount+ Original, as See It Now Studios brokered an agreement to that effect. Susan Zirinsky, the president of See It Now Studios, who spoke at Mip TV today, urged documentary makers not to compensate contributors.

A distinct rendition named “My King Charles” was marketed by Silverlinings Rights, and it was sold to 14 co-production associates, including Denmark’s TV2, Germany’s RTL, and Australia’s Nine Network last month. Initially, the identity of a US streaming platform that had attached itself to the project was unknown when news of the documentary was released. However, Paramount+ and See It Now have been officially confirmed to be part of the American version, as reported by UK trade Broadcast last month. The 90-minute documentary, which is described as “partly a coming-of-age tale,” comprises exclusive interviews, never-before-seen photos and letters.

The upcoming Paramount+ documentary explores the life of King Charles and features interviews with various individuals, including his former boarding schoolmate Johnny Stonborough, who referred to him as “the boy who walked alone” due to bullying and isolation. Other interviewees include King Charles’ goddaughter India Hicks, former head chef Mervyn Wycherley, squadron leader Graham Laurien, and former girlfriends Janet Jenkins and Jane Ward.

In addition to shedding light on previously unreported details about King Charles’ relationship with Princess Diana and its impact on his relationship with his son Prince Harry, the documentary also reveals an intimate and emotional side of the king that viewers have not seen before. Zirinsky, of See It Now Studios, claims that the documentary will alter viewers’ perceptions of the king, leaving them with a fresh understanding of the experiences that have shaped him. Prince Harry is set to attend the Coronation next month.

Dan Chambers and Tom Adams, both executive producers from Blink, are joined by producer-director Jim Nally. Additionally, Zirinsky and Terence from See It Now Studios serve as executive producers, while Aysu Saliba is the supervising producer, and Adam Goldfried is the executive director.

See It Now Studios specializes in developing and producing documentary series for various networks, including Paramount+, CBS, and Paramount Global TV. They also create content for international and third-party platforms. Since their launch in September 2021, they have produced shows such as 11 Minutes, FBI True, and The Gift: Kindness Goes Viral with Steve Hartman. They have also conducted interview specials with celebrities such as Halle Berry, Chris Rock, and Prince Harry.
